The Emerald Coast
Although it is still a magnet for billionaires’
super-yachts, Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda
(Emerald Coast) is becoming increasingly
accessible. Observing the mind-boggling
wealth on display is definitely half the fun. But
the real draw here are the glorious beaches.
Lapped by translucent blue waters, backed by
macchia (scrubland perfumed by wild herbs
such as thyme, rosemary and oregano) and
framed by Mistral-warped granite outcrops,
they are among the finest in the
Mediterranean. And still, there are unique
historic landmarks on the island that are
certainly worth a visit. Exploring one of its
megalithic nuraghe for example, dating back
as far as 3,500BC. There are more than 8,000 of
these stone towers in Sardinia, though their
exact purpose remains unproven. One more
good reason to visit Sardinia: the fabulous
cheeses and the wines, among the most
fascinating coming out of Italy.
