The Secret of the Sardinians
By: Effetto Italy On: June 1, 2021 In: Destinations
Sardinia, an island in Mediterranean, often known for its crystal-clear
water and Emerald Coast hot spots, has always been celebrated as a beach
goers dream. In the past 15 years, however, it has been most revered and
studied as a virtual fountain of youth.
Coined the “Blue Zones” in 1994, they are the regions in the world with low
rates of chronic disease, where inhabitants live the longer than anywhere
else. Along with Icaria, Greece, Okinawa, Japan, the Nicoya Peninsula, and
the 7th Day Adventists of Loma Linda, CA, the Ogliastra region
of Sardinia finds itself among these top tiered areas with ultra-healthy
populations.
There are roughly ten times more centenarians per capita in cluster of
villages in Sardinia than in the USA. What are some of the secrets to their
longevity?
-
A lean, plant based diet
– The classic Sardinian diet is based heavily on whole grains, legumes,
vegetables and fruit. Meat is usually only eaten on Sundays. Pecorino
cheese and olive oil make up most of the fat component. The food is
simple and always very fresh.
-
Functional exercise
– Walking miles daily is very common amongst Sardinians. The landscape
is steep and mountainous, enabling their heart rates to increase
multiple times per day.
-
Local wines
– The local Cannanou wine, made with the grenache grape, is especially
high in antioxidants and is a staple in Sardinian life. This red has
2-3 times the amount of flavonoids as other wines.
-
Family (especially elders) first
– Their strong family values ensure that all members of the group are
cared for. Elders usually stay within the family unit and do not live
in retirement homes, creating feelings of self-worth throughout the
lifetime.
While the official blue zone applies only to the Ogliastra region, these
best practices are a big part of the Sardinian lifestyle overall. For more
