Fountains
For over two thousand years fountains
have provided drinking water and
decorated the piazzas of Rome. In the
ancient times the town had nine
aqueducts feeding just under forty
monumental fountains and almost six
hundred public fountains used to supply
the people with fresh running water. Each
of the major fountains was connected to
two different aqueducts, a sort of backup
system in case one failed. Yet today,
Rome features more than 2000 fountains,
fifty of which are historic land marks. An
hour learned walk through a selection of
them will tell you more about the Eternal
City than a full day in a museum.
